Penguin Facts

Penguins are birds. They have wings, but they cannot fly!

Penguins can swim. They waddle. Some slide on their bellies on the ice!

Penguins are fast swimmers!

Many penguins live in the very cold, icy Antarctica, but other penguins live in warmer areas in South America, Australia, New Zealand, and Africa.

Penguins have a layer of fat, called blubbler, to keep them warm.

Penguins lay eggs. They build their nests out of rocks, sticks, feathers, or whatever they can find. The daddy and mommy penguin take turns watching the egg while the other finds food.

Penguins eat lots of seafood. They eat krill, fish, and squid.

Penguins live in large groups to keep predators away. Predators are animals that eat penguins.

Teaching Tip: Some penguins live near the equator. These penguins are called the Galapagos penguins. How could you and your child create a habitat for a penguin that lives in a warmer climate?

Galapagos Penguin Facts

These penguins are the only penguins that live north of the equator. (Not counting the ones in captivity.)

They are found on the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador.

All penguins, including the Galapagos penguins, are protected from hunting and egg collecting. This species has been recovering from an irregular period of winds and sea surface temperatures called El Nino Souther Oscillation in 1985 and again in 1997/1998 when temperatures were warming.

Encouragement: Playing with your child decreases stress and increases brain development.
